How to Avoid the Most Common Shaving Mistakes at All Costs
Over an entire lifetime, the average woman will shave 7,718.4 times and spend nearly $10,000 on shaving-related products.
With so much time and money put into this activity, you want to make sure you are doing it properly – right?
If you think you have perfected your shaving routine, you may need to think again. Here are five common shaving mistakes to avoid at all costs.
1. Shaving in the Wrong Direction
Many people start off by shaving against the grain, but this can seriously irritate your skin. The first round should always go with the hair growth. Then, if the hair is not as short as you would like, you can go against the grain on the second round.
In sensitive places like your bikini area, you never want to go against the grain. It is essential to shave in the direction that your hair is growing in these areas.
2. Pressing Too Firmly With Your Razor
Some people think that the harder they press with the razor, the closer shave they will get. If you push too hard with your razor, you are more likely to cut your skin. Light, even strokes will get the job done just fine.
If you do happen to cut yourself, clean the area with warm soapy water and cover it with a band-aid to control the bleeding.
3. Not Using Shaving Cream
Being in a rush and skipping the shaving cream is not worth the consequences. Shaving cream is essential to prepping your skin for the shave. If you avoid shaving cream, you’ll almost certainly have some sort of irritation.
If you want the best shave, then choose a shaving cream with extra benefits. Some shaving creams have aloe vera to aid in moisturizing. You could also choose a shaving cream with benzoyl peroxide to help with any acne issues.
4. Not Cleansing Before Shaving
One big mistake that many people make is not prepping the skin properly. In addition to shaving cream, it is critical to let your skin soak for a bit before you begin to shave.
Warm and wet hair is three times easier to shave than dry hair. For this reason, it is recommended that you shave at the end of your shower so your skin will be moist and your hair will be easier to trim.
5. Not Switching Out Your Blade or Razor
You need to make sure you are properly caring for your shaving equipment. Disposable shaving razors should be thrown out every five to seven shaves. Equally, blades on non-disposable razors should be changed every five to seven shaves.
Electric razors last a little longer. You should be able to go six months before switching out these blades.
Avoid These Shaving Mistakes
If you are making any of these shaving mistakes, then it is time to switch up your routine. Keeping your skin smooth and healthy should be a priority for everyone.
