3 Reasons Baby Hats Are Important

Nothing is cuter than a baby in a baby hat, but did you know that they serve a purpose too?

We’ve all seen a babies in baby hats on days when no adult is wearing a hat. Babies love to tear them off their heads, and parents hate trying to put them back on. So why do we do it? Why do babies need to wear sun hats?

There are lots of benefits of baby hats, from protection to ease to style. Here are some of the best reasons to put your baby in a hat this summer.

  1. Protection From the Sun

One of the most obvious benefits of baby hats is to protect them from the sun.

We should all be protecting ourselves from harmful UV rays from the sun, but a baby’s skin is even more sensitive than adult skin. It hasn’t had the time to develop natural protections itself or to become a little weathered. This means that your baby is much more likely to get a sunburn.

And sunburns are worse for babies! They don’t understand what’s happening and so find it more upsetting than you would if your skin was hot and stinging. One of the baby hat benefits is that you’ll never have to see your baby in that kind of discomfort.

  1. Less Need For Sunscreen

Of course, you can protect your baby from the sun with sunscreen, but you run into two problems when you use this method.

First of all, many sunscreens are full of harsh chemicals that can irritate your baby’s skin. If you must use sunscreen (and after six months of age, it’s recommended that you use a hat and sunscreen), make sure it’s a mineral option. This will be gentler on your baby’s skin but just as effective at protecting them.

Second, you need to reapply sunscreen often, and it’s hard to make sure that you’re getting every inch of skin every time. Wearing baby hats works as another layer of protection. It can cover the spots that you may have missed so that your baby’s whole face, neck, and shoulders are kept in the shade.

  1. Keeping Your Baby Cool

Babies have a tough time controlling their own internal temperature. It’s important to get them some fresh air every day, but if it’s hot out, you need to make a plan for keeping them cool.

The importance of baby hats is that they keep your baby in the shade all the time. They’re out of the sun and therefore getting less hot every moment. Keeping something on your head also helps you regulate your body temperature in general. Insulation escapes from the top of your head, so it’s good to have a barrier there.

A hat will also keep your baby cool in a fashion sense. Gone are the days of frilly, babyish-looking baby hats. See our products for ideas about how to dress your baby in style.
