Easy Plants to Grow Outside

From flowers to fruits, you can grow plenty of things successfully as a first-time gardener. Here are some favorites for outdoor planting!

Pansies

Known for being one of the most resilient flowers, pansies are very self-sufficient and will add vibrant colors to your garden without demanding too much expertise or attention. They have been known to survive Winter, and some varieties have even been bred to live in certain climates!

Pansies are ideally planted between August and October, depending on which part of the country you live in. They can also be planted in early Spring.

If you’d prefer, you can buy fully grown plants and deposit them in the ground!

When growing from seeds, try to give the plants 7-12 inches of space. In closer climates, plant them in direct sunlight; in hotter ones, give them a few hours of shade in the day.

Herbs – Mint and Basil

Herbs are very hardy plants. If you want something useable growing in your garden, these are ideal easy plants to grow outdoors!

Basil, said to act as a natural bug repellent given its aroma, needs plenty of sunlight. They should have plenty of space, and simply need watering lightly whenever the soil feels dry to the touch.

Mint is a herb that may try to conquer your garden space – but fear not, you can use a tubular container buried in the soil to keep the plant in check. Mint needs damp soil to thrive and grows best in areas of moderate shade.

Sunflowers

If you’re looking for bright, Summery colors that will attract butterflies to your garden, sunflowers are perfect for you. They can grow well in soil anything up to waterlogged, and get themselves through droughts with great gusto.

They do need direct sunlight, so be sure to plant them in the open.

Remember, they can grow tall, so be sure you don’t put them somewhere that will block light for other plants. Once you have planted, giving plenty of space, be sure to water well!
