Tvaroth are the remaining and scattered bits of once great creatures. Aeons ago these titanic beings were used as laborers for a great civilization. Able to shape their own form to fit whatever task they were given they were the ultimate laborers. But after the eventual death of their masters, the workers started wasting away, devoid of purpose.
Through interaction with the Datasphere, some smaller pieces gained a semblance of sentience and over time a sense of self and personalities.
These remnants are the Tvaroth. Pieces of a shapeless mass of matter, imbued with a mind of their own.
Tvaroth are made, not born. Few Tvaroth alive to this day are actually descendants of their original progenitors. Instead they are a product of their innate ability to convert matter into more of themselves. The process takes a long time and a great amount of raw matter, but with patience any Tvaroth can create an offspring.
Freshly made Tvaroth resemble nothing so much as a lump of gray clay. But they tend to automatically pick up on whatever it is in the Datasphere that imbued their kind with their minds to begin with. From that point onward, a young Tvaroth will observe their surrounding and try to imitate any living thing it sees. This essentially means that the first shape most Tvaroth take is very similar to that of whomever is with them at the time. (Which in most cases is their creator, but might not be)
Over a couple of weeks a Tvaroth will develop their own distinct default shape from what they can gather in their surroundings. During this time they rapidly consume more raw matter until they can match their surrounding life forms.
Most Tvaroth remain in their default form for the majority of their life and tend to find it more comfortable. Many of them never actually change it at all and some are even unaware of their true nature altogether, living life as whatever life form they first imitated.
Tvaroth can live for an extraordinary long time as long as they sustain themselves well enough. Whatever energy it is that animated them takes centuries to die out on its own and can be extended well beyond that with proper care.
Most Tvaroth die only when they are damaged beyond the point of their bodies to repair the damage, at which point they will fall apart into the gray clay mass out of which they are formed.
Simply put, they don’t have one. Tvaroth are few and far between in the world and since their nature is not readily apparent, most won’t recognize one another even if they happen to cross paths.
The largest amount of Tvaroth regularly found in one place is two. And that is only when one of them decides to create an offspring. In most cases creator and offspring will stay together for a couple of months, after which they part ways and live their separate lives.
Tvaroth tend to look like the dominant species of the era they were created in but can sometimes resemble things that are much older in nature, depending on their creator and how they came into their default form. However, many of those who don’t fit in with the “current look” will change their appearance to better fit it whenever they interact with people.
Tvaroth have an intuitive understanding of how things, especially life forms, are shaped and can imitate those shapes down to the finest bits of internal biology. When a Tvaroth changes their form it’s not just a cosmetic shift but a complete rearrangement of their being.
The material from which they are created can be rearranged and reformed to mimic any organic substance or structure from bone to muscle to skin. However, it cannot recreate inorganic materials.
In the same manner, anything they have on them while they transform will not be affected. Unless the chosen shape does not fit the constraints set by whatever they had on them, in which case either the material breaks or their transformation stops and snaps back to their default form. (For example, a tight shirt might rip but a suit of armor would not)
While their original shape is that of a gray, featureless lump of mass, almost all Tvaroth naturally assume their default form and would in fact have trouble assuming their “true” form even if they wanted. This is because their shape is held together by their mind, and their mind has both settled on their default form as the “norm” and in most cases has no recollection of their “true” form and thus has little understanding of how to change into it.
- Altered Biology
- +2 to either Might or Speed Pool while you remain in your default form.Whenever you change your form, you can assign +2 to Might or Speed. This bonus remains active for as long as you remain in that form.
The Pool that previously held the +2 bonus will be reduces by 2 accordingly every time you shift.
While you may reassign the points on any change, your default form will always retain the same bonus chosen at character creation.
Choosing the same bonus you had in your previous form does nothing and your stats remain unchanged.
- Shape Form
- You can assume another form of roughly your own body mass. Whenever you do, Altered Biology applies. If one of your stat pools would be reduces to 0 as a result of Altered Biology, you can’t change into another form.You can change form once per Character Tier per day. After that, every transformation costs 3 Intellect points and requires passing a Might task with a difficulty of 2 after the points have been spend.
Changing your form is an action.
- Adaptive System
- As long as it is organic, you can probably consume it. Your body will react to poisonous substances the same way any other creature of your current shape will, but otherwise, as long as it is organic, it can be food.
- You are trained in perceiving living things.
- You do not heal as others do. For every 3 Might you recover (whether via Recovery Roll or otherwise) you need at least a full, solid meal. If you cannot provide yourself with enough organic raw materials you cannot recover.

The background information can be ignored or altered at will and is merely meant to clarify some of the finer points and integrate the whole thing into the Numenera setting.
